Blue Jays Player of the Week (May 23-30)

Jays From The Couch continues to bring you the Blue Jays pitcher and hitter of the week, including the fan vote.

The Blue Jays offence look to be finally hitting their stride! After winning the final game in Minnesota, splitting the four game series against the Twins, the Blue Jays were set to start off a very heavy AL East schedule. The Blue Jays were stellar in the two divisional series, taking down their division rivals with clutch hitting. Winning two of three against the Yankees in the Bronx, then taking two of three against the Red Sox at home, losing the final game in hard fought extra innings.

As mentioned a few weeks ago in a player of the week article, the Blue Jays needed weeks like these to come their way so they can get back on track, and that they did this past week, sitting at exactly .500 opening up a home stand against the New York Yankees. The Jays next twelve games will continue to be against AL East teams, and gaining momentum on their divisional foes will be vital to staying in the playoff race for the first half of the season. Here are your players of the week!

Hitter of the Week – Josh Donaldson .296/.406/.667, 8H, 3HR, 6RBI

Last year’s AL MVP Josh Donaldson looked to have an MVP caliber week at the plate. Donaldson’s week included a massive first game against the Red Sox, going 4/5 with two home runs and two RBI’s. Donaldson week to week seems to be getting back to his last years numbers a bit more, and weeks like this will surely bring Donaldson to the caliber of play we saw last year. Although Martin and Donaldson had similar weeks in both home runs and RBI’s, Donaldson takes the crown for having a slightly higher average, and walking three more times than Martin.

Runner Up –  Russell Martin .261/.320/.696, 6H, 3HR, 6RBI

Before this week began, Russel Martin was batting .172/.237/.180, his K% of 33.3% was a career high, and only had one extra base hit to his name this season all season. Those numbers would change for Martin drastically this week, who would have two multi hit games, including his second career two home run game against the Yankees. Martin would top off his week on Saturday against Boston, going 3/5, with another home run, 3RBI’s, including hitting in the tying run and scoring the final run in the ninth inning. As most of us expected, all these great hitters can’t keep underperforming to their career worst for long, it looks like Martin bounced out of his bad streak this week, and hopefully can continue this for the weeks to come.

Pitcher of the Week – Roberto Osuna 5.0IP, 1H, 1BB, 5SO, 0.00ERA

Osuna remains one of the only steady pieces in bullpen this season, but calling him steady would be a complete understatement. Osuna continues to be lights out in the late innings of ball games, with his overall ERA to 1.17 in 23IP. This week Osuna made five appearances out of the bullpen, pitching 5.0IP and only allowing one hit, and one walk. Although the Blue Jays bullpen overall has struggled this year, it’s always reassuring with a lead late in the game that Osuna is sitting and waiting for the ninth inning.

Fan Vote – Russell Martin

The people have spoken! This weeks runner up Russell Martin, is going to get some love from the fan vote, the only vote that really matters. Thanks to all who voted in this weeks poll, make sure you get your say this Saturday after the game.
