Jays Nest Podcast Ep79: Blue Jays Hot Players, Hot Stats & Hot Takes

Jays From the Couch brings you Episode 79 of the Jays Nest Podcast. This week, we look at some hot Toronto Blue Jays, hot stats & more!

Episode 79 of the Jays Nest Podcast features great discussion (as always) about the recent success of Josh Donaldson and Michael Saunders. The flip side of talking about hot hitters is bringing up cold pitchers. We look at the struggles of Marcus Stroman. Our Stat of the Week looks into the flaws of a commonly used offensive metric. Our “Hot Takes” take a chance on Drew Hutchison and some advice for moving closer to July.

The Jays’ Nest Podcast- Talking Toronto Blue Jays – Jays Nest #79- Hot Blue Jays, Hot Stats & Hot Takes!

In This Week’s Episode:

  • We dig into the week that was for Josh Donaldson as he is the recipient of the AL Player of the Week Award. We debate whether there was someone more deserving. It is a tough call, considering The Bringer of Rain hit .444 for the week.
  • From there, we bring ourselves to discuss the recent idea that Jose Bautista is seeing his free agent value decline this season. This might appear to be true in light of his recent toe injury. We chat about just how much logic there is to this.
  • Our Stat of the Week segment dives into the somewhat murky waters of OPS. The stat that measures OBP + SLG is a simple way of calculating a general sense of a batter’s impact. Despite its wide usage, it has flaws and should be taken lightly. We put it into context for Blue Jays fans using Donaldson and Michael Saunders.
  • This week’s “Hot Takes” ask bout the near future of Drew Hutchison. He’s pitching well in AAA Buffalo and the current plans of the organization very well could include him. As well, we offer some advice for navigating the treacherous waters that surely await us as we sail into the Trade Deadline.
