Blue Jays Player of the Week (June 13-19)

JAYS FROM THE COUCH CONTINUES TO BRING YOU THE BLUE JAYS PITCHER AND HITTER OF THE WEEK, INCLUDING THE FAN VOTE.

The Blue Jays had another great week of baseball, inching closer and closer to defending their AL East crown. After winning a huge series (3 of 4) against the Baltimore Orioles, the Blue Jays were off to play the struggling Philadelphia Phillies in a home and home series. The Blue Jays would be brought back down to earth from their hot game in game one against the Phillies, losing 0-7, but would bounce back strong winning the next four games (including the first of the away series in Baltimore) by incredibly large margins.

Now the Blue Jays are set to take on a schedule, entirely outside their division for more than an entire month. If this play continues from the Jays, it’s not inconceivable to think they could be leading the division by a good margin by the All-Star break. We are in the heart of the season, and games are becoming more important as the season continues to move on. So let’s cap off this great week with the best Blue Jays performers from last week.

Hitter of the Week

Josh Donaldson .444/.545/1.000, 12H, 3HR, 9RBI, 11R, 8XBH

Josh Donaldson wasn’t just the best hitters for the Blue Jays this week, he was the best hitter in the entire American League. Donaldson has hit his power surge, hitting in six out of the seven games played last week, and hitting an extra base hit in five out of seven. Donaldson didn’t really start the season off slow, but he definitely was not in his regular MVP form. Now it seems as though Donaldson is hitting his stride, and is looking like he might fight for contention in the MVP race again.

Runner Up

 Devon Travis .545/.565/1.000, 12H, 2HR, 7RBI

It would almost seem as though Travis had a better week at the plate than Donaldson, but Travis only played in six games to Donaldson’s seven, so he takes the back seat this week. Since coming back from surgery, Travis struggled to find his form at the plate from a season ago. It would obviously take some time for his strength behind the plate to return, and this week he’s found his groove. In his six games this week, Travis had a hit in all of them, and five multi hit games. At the beginning of the season, he was expected to play everyday at second base. With production at the plate like this, there’s no reason not to have him there.

Honorable Mention

 Michael Saunders .286/.375/.857, 6H, 4HR, 9RBI

While his numbers might not be as eye opening as the other two on this list, Saunders had a great week, topped off by an historic game. In the first game on the road against the Orioles, Saunders went 3/5, with three home runs, and 8RBI. This was tied for the most RBI in a game by a Canadian. Saunders had game and the fans agreed, with many people voting for Saunders, including @habs_anonymous.

Pitcher of the Week

J.A. Happ 7.0IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 5SO

Happ took the mound to face his former team, the Phillies, a game in which he dominated. He would strike out five, only walking two, and not giving up an earned run in seven innings pitched. In His previous two starts, he struggled to keep the ball in the park, giving up five home runs in 12IP. You can be as picky as you like saying this start wasn’t that impressive because it was against the Phillies, but the Phillies have some great pieces this year, and it was also against their stud Aaron Nola, so this start was as impressive as any. This kind of bounce back game was exactly what Happ needed.
