JAYS FROM THE COUCH CONTINUES TO BRING YOU THE BLUE JAYS PITCHER AND HITTER OF THE WEEK, INCLUDING THE FAN VOTE.
This week in Blue Jays Land was rather upsetting. After splitting a two game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Blue Jays were off to face the struggling Chicago White Sox. The Blue Jays would win one out of three against the Sox, as the bullpen continued to struggle closing out late in games.
The road ahead doesn’t look easy, the Blue Jays are set to face the Cleveland Indians who have won nine games in a row, the Kansas City Royals who are fighting for that second Wild Card spot. With the offence starting to come around, we can only hope the Blue Jays find some much needed bullpen relief this trade deadline. Although it was a rough week, here are your Blue Jays players of the week.
Hitter of the Week
Troy Tulowitzki .352/.421/.765, 3XBH, 4RBI
Troy Tulowitzki is back off the DL, and starting to look like he’s back to his old self at the plate. There has never been any doubt this season, that Tulowitzki’s glove makes him an elite short stop in the American League. The struggles at the plate weren’t just career worst for Tulowitzki, they were bad by most players’ standards. It was only a matter of time before Tulowitzki got back into All-Star form, and this week was a great start for that. Tulo would reach base in all five games, have base hits in four, and collecting two home runs to his name.
Devon Travis .300/.333/.450, 6H, 1HR, 2RBI
Another player who’s been nothing but hot at the plate since returning from the DL, is second baseman Devon Travis. Travis, after struggling at the plate his first week back, has returned to the form we saw him perform at the beginning of last year. In five games this week, Travis would reach base on hits in four out of five games, have a homerun, and two multi hit games. Devon Travis was looked at in the beginning of the season as the everyday second basemen. It’s hard to tell after a player has surgery what he will perform like, will he be cautious at the plate? Will he ever regain that confidence he once had? Travis has proven any doubters wrong thus far, putting together a stellar 2016 campaign.
Pitcher of the Week
Joe Biagini 2.0IP, 0H, 0ER, 0BB, 2SO
It was a difficult choice for pitcher of the week, most bullpen pieces had one bad outing skewing their numbers, and almost every starter just had starts that didn’t blow your mind away. After doing a full investigative deep dive in the pitching performances this week, reliever Joe Biagini had the best outing. Biagini would only work in one game pitching 2.0, and facing seven total batters. In that outing Biagini wouldn’t allow a run to cross base, and hitting the strike zone repeatedly.
Troy Tulowitzki 352/.421/.765, 3XBH, 4RBI
The fans agree! Troy Tulowitzki is your Blue Jays player of the week.
