Toronto Blue Jays Player of the Week: September 19-25

JAYS FROM THE COUCH CONTINUES TO BRING YOU THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS PITCHER AND HITTER OF THE WEEK, INCLUDING THE FAN VOTE.

September baseball is fun! It was tough to say that a couple of weeks ago, but the Blue Jays are still in the thick of things, and will continue to fight for home field advantage in the AL Wild Card game. The Blue Jays had the week they needed, after stumbling at the beginning of September.

Starting out the week finishing off their road trip against the Seattle Mariners, the Blue Jays would take two out of three from the Mariners in front of a home like atmosphere. The series was a great way for the Blue Jays to get back on track, both on the mound and at the plate. The Jays would then head back home for a four game series against the Yankees, and the hot pitching from the Seattle series would continue. The Blue Jays would win the first three games to finish off the week, and drop the final game on Monday night to finish off the series.

It seems as though the Blue Jays are projecting upward at the best time, heading into an important final six games against the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox. With another great week in the book, here are your players of the week.

Hitter of the Week – Jose Bautista

A couple of weeks ago, it seemed as though most people were chalking up Bautista’s season to an injury riddled campaign and a really, really bad sign for a player in a contract year. This week though, Bautista would come through in every clutch moment, slashing .381/.519/.905, with three huge home runs, and driving in eight runs! He would look like his regular self, slapping balls to left field, and walking in very important situations, even mixing in yet another signature bat flip in the ninth inning of the final game in Seattle to tie the game.

If Bautista can come through for a huge September and peak at the right time, it would be a huge boost to the Blue Jays offense coming down to the final games of the season. Sometimes players can simply be remembered for important moments, maybe a hot final month to push the Blue Jays into the postseason will help forget that both injuries were flukes and maybe Bautista is worth an extension?

Pitcher of the Week – The Entire Starting Rotation

There were too many stellar starts on the mound this week to choose from to narrow it down to one great player. The pitching has been better than expected all season, but in weeks like this, it completely carries the team to easy wins. The rotation of J.A. Happ, Marco Estrada, Francisco Liriano, Marcus Stroman, and Aaron Sanchez, all had great starts this week combining to pitch 31 innings, allowing only four runs to cross home plate. Pitchers like Stroman, and Estrada have become hot recently, while Happ and Sanchez continue their consistent outings. If the Blue Jays are to make it into the playoffs, they will have the consistent pitching to get them very deep into October.

Fan Vote – Jose Bautista

This fan vote was really active, and fun having the entire starting pitching staff in there. This week though it was Bautista’s clutch moments that would get the final fans vote and win this weeks player of the week. Stay tuned next week for the final article of the year, as it’s hard to believe we are this close to the postseason already. Thanks again to all who voted, check out the final vote after the seasons finals game against the Red Sox.
