The Toronto Blue Jays have locked up their manager for the foreseeable future. Shi Davidi of Sportsnet brings us the news that John Gibbons will be given two additional years, guaranteed and an option for a third. This deal will keep him in Toronto through the 2019 season and could see him add the 2020 season as well.

This deal makes a lot of sense for the perceived competitive window the team within which the team seems to be operating. While many will criticize Gibby for a number of things, he actually could be the perfect manager for this Blue Jays team. We explained these ideas fully in Episode 113 of the Jays From the Couch Radio podcast.

In honour of his shiny new deal, we thought we would bring you the best of John Gibbons. We scoured the internet, so sit back and enjoy!

Texas Roast

Gibby is always good for a comment, or two. That was particularly true when he gave his thoughts on what took place in Arlington when Rougned Odor sucker punched Jose Bautista. Not surprisingly, he had some words for both the Rangers and the umpiring crew:

Ho Hum Suspension

When Gibby was suspended for 3 games back in May, he responded in typical Gibby ‘it is what it is’ fashion and was making people laugh during his scrum. He got a good chuckle when he announced his plans for the 3 days:

Gibby Don’t Care

While he will always be remembered for altercations with players in his first go ’round with the club, you have to respect the stance from which they came. Gibby is not one to give in to egos or to just let players do whatever they want. While he lets them be themselves and takes a hands off approach, he is quick to check them when they cross a line, even if they’re an MVP:

Of course, there was another explanation for what happened that day. You can decide for yourself which is more accurate. Either one makes Gibby hilarious. Josh Donaldson is no slouch, either.

Suck on That One

While Gibby has had his brush ups with players, he is widely known as a player’s manager. Former GM, J.P. Ricciardi once said that ‘if you can’t play for Gibby, you can’t play for anyone’. That is the case because he trusts his players, but is also quick to defend them, even against critics.

You can also add this gem to the list of times when Gibby supported his players :

Gibbons must have been a particularly good mood that day, because he took a chance to get a shot in at former Sportsnet reporter, Barry Davis. He gave him a jab about being busy looking for stories about fake injuries:

Gibby Needs a Beer

Of course, just like everyone else, Gibby is no stranger to the inherent frustration playing baseball lends itself to. One need only do a quick search for the number of times he’s been tossed from a game in his career for proof of that. After another ejection in 2014, Gibby finally admitted that his frustration reached the ‘I need a drink’ phase:

While he is always good for a comment, there are some times when he just doesn’t feel like talking. Back in June of last year, we heard of one such day. Apparently, he left a note for Barry Davis that summed up everything he wanted to say:

Way Back When

In case you were wondering if Gibby has always been laid back, take a look at his first ever MLB home run. He trots the bases like he’s been there before and his celebration as he crossed home plate was muted, which is pretty much on par with what you would expect…minus the waddle.

A hearty congratulations to John Gibbons on his contract extension. Here’s to many more Gibby Moments!

We’d love to hear your favorite Gibby moments. Please share them in the comment section.
