Toronto Blue Jays Fun: JFtC Presents: A Word From Gibby 2

Jays From the Couch brings you A Word From Gibby, a lighthearted presentation of recent comments from Toronto Blue Jays manager, John Gibbons

Toronto Blue Jays manager recently appeared on Power Alley with Mike Ferrin, Jim Duquette, and Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio. We had some fun with some of the things he had to say. It is not too difficult to tell that this was inspired by the SNL greatness of Jack Handy. What those had was an ability to make us laugh and think at the same time.

John Gibbons is similar in that he is able to entertain us with his personality, but often provides us opportunity to pause and think about a good number of things. After the announcement of his contract extension, we brought you The Best of Gibby, which was a tribute to the gems he’s given us over the years.

All jokes aside, the Toronto Blue Jays came home to Toronto (and promptly blew a lead…again) after a trip to Anaheim and St Louis that saw them win just three times in seven tries. A series split against the Angels was certainly something that we would accept, considering the brutality that April has subjected us to.

But, losing both games of that double header on Thursday was such a gut punch. If you consider that the road trip could have easily been a winning experience if not for implosions, it is that much more frustrating. It appears that the Blue Jays just keep finding more ways to lose. This recent road trip saw the offense show signs of life, only to have the bullpen cough up leads. Add to that a start from Casey Lawrence that we would love to forget and things just didn’t work out. At all.

The past few games have seen some questionable decisions from Gibby, including leaving in relievers longer than he should, and not reviewing plays that were obviously incorrect. For example, there was a bunt in St Louis where the batter clearly stepped on home plate, which would mean he should have been out, but the runner on first would have to go back, rather than advance on the sacrifice. Instead, Gibby (and everyone else) let it stand, which allowed the runner to be in scoring position.

Overall, Gibby’s tenure in Toronto has been polarizing among the fans base. There are those who love him, and those who don’t. There seems to be little middle ground.
