The Toronto Blue Jays are entering the final day of what could be a very interesting 2017 Non-Waiver Trade Deadline. They are in an odd position of not being buyers, or sellers. GM, Ross Atkins is angling to get a head start on competing in 2018, while maintaining a (very) outside chance at competing for a playoff spot this season.

To that end, he’ll be looking to leverage negotiations and trade talks to look for the best deal to improve his team now and for next year, with a clear goal of obtaining players with years of control. It is not an easy task. At Sportsnet, Shi Davidi highlights just how challenging it can be.

While other teams across baseball are looking at making the next shrewd blockbuster to bolster their more likely playoff run, the Blue Jays will be looking at making slightly less sexy moves. Jays From the Couch will keep on top of everything, so you don’t have to. We’ll provide LIVE updates (below) throughout the day.

What we know:

  • Joe Smith just might be the most valuable commodity Toronto has and they’ll look to use the impending free agent as a chip to bring in young talent.
  • Marco Estrada and Francisco Liriano are free agents at the end of the season and could bring in some kind of haul, although the outlook of such a return is rather foggy since neither have been performing their way into trade value.
  • Jose Bautista has been mentioned as a possible trade candidate. However, he has 10-5 rights, so can veto any trade. It is possible that one of the conditions to convince him to do so would be the new team picking up his option for next year. That presents difficulty since Jose hasn’t actually been the elite slugger of old. What is more likely is that he passes through waivers in August and ends up being traded at that deadline.
  • J.A. Happ could present some trade value since he has another year left on his deal. Though, he hasn’t lived up to his 20 game win season, and is not likely to. That didn’t stop Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports from saying that the Blue Jays are willing to listen on Happ
  • Here is a list of players who are likely remaining on the trade block

Live Updates:

  • Joe Smith appears to be heading to Cleveland:

  • After missing out on Liriano (see below), it looks like the Royals are not done shopping at the Jays Shop:

  • With Liriano on the move (see below), the Blue Jays look to be turning attention to Joe Smith, likely their most valuable chip.

  • If the Astros are talking to Atkins about Liriano one has to wonder if they see him as a relief option. Rosenthal seems to think so. But, having a lefty starter option has to be appealing as well. With previous word of Royals interest, a bidding war (of sorts) would be interesting…and unexpected.

  • This one may be tough to envision. Do the Cubs have anyone left? Would the Dodgers even part with anything of value? We know they will not part with high level prospects willingly, which makes negotiation difficult.

  • The Yankees very well could be getting better soon. The trade rumor that continues to drag on is that they are in the process of landing Sonny Gray, though there doesn’t seem to be any final deal yet.

  • The Blue Jays have been looking at the Cardinals AAA team, possibly in an attempt to look for that controllable talent. Could Joe Smith be enough to bring in a AAA middle infielder? With Troy Tulowitzki suffering that ankle injury, perhaps it is worth a look.
