Blue Jays’ Jose Bautista: If This is The End…A Video Tribute

With Jose Bautista’s tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays winding down, Jays From the Couch pays tribute to the G.O.A.T.

The Toronto Blue Jays have 13 games remaining in their 2017 schedule. It has not gone the way we had hoped it would, so we are all probably thankful it is coming to an end. Although, that could also mean that the Jose Bautista era in Toronto could also be in its final days. The soon to be 37 year old has had a disappointing season, one that all but guarantees the Blue Jays will not pick up their side of the mutual option in his current contract.

As such, we could be looking at the end of one of the franchise’s more historic runs.

There is no one who would argue with the disappointment of this year’s performance from Joey Bats. His .681 OPS is well below what we expected, even from a player in decline. He has struck out more times in 2017 than he has in any other season. His K% sits at almost 25%. His famous eye at the plate has also taken a hit as his BB% has reached its lowest mark since 2007. Given the 2018 option on his contract is valued at $17M, which a -0.3 fWAR does not justify, the club will offer him his $500k buyout and look to other options…unless a different deal can be worked out with more palatable terms.

Barring that, all we’ll have from here on out is the memories that Bautista has given us. And, for many fans out there, these memories have deeply ingrained themselves in our hearts. Rather than lament his loss, we should celebrate that Jose Bautista wore a Blue Jays uniform. He’s given us years of cheering and one or two tears of ecstasy along the way.

Joey Bats wore a Blue Jays uniform at an All Star game 6 times, finished in the top 10 in MVP voting 4 times and climbed the franchise’s all time leaderboard. He’s 2nd all time in HR, 3rd in RBI and 3rd in OPS. He put up 54 HR in 2010 on his way to 6.4 fWAR. He would hit 43 HR in 2011 and reach 8.1 fWAR. In total, he’s given Toronto 35.7 fWAR. That is not even to mention the charity work he does through his own Bautista Fund as well as others. There is no question that Jose Bautista is one of the greatest Blue Jays ever.

To recognize that and to pay tribute to the G.O.A.T., we reached out to Blue Jays Twitter and asked for your favorite Bautista moments. There were so many great suggestions, all of which can be found by checking out the thread HERE. We asked for responses because we were planning our own tribute to Bautista.

And, with out further delay, here it is: The Jays From the Couch video tribute to the Bat Flipping, Beard Growing, Kid Inspiring, Missile Throwing, Not Backing Down, BMF who plays the game of baseball with passion, intelligence and spunk, the role model and philanthropist, Jose Bautista:
