Blue Jays Contract Options

To no one’s surprise, the Blue Jays declined the 2018 option on OF, Jose Bautista.

Blue Jays Arbitration

Players who are under TC (Team Control) are in the first three years of their service time. Players under TC will make the league minimum or slightly above league minimum, which should be $545,000 in 2018. Arbitration figures below via Baseball Reference and projected deals via MLBTR.

PlayerOptionProjected 2018 SalaryActual 2018 Salary
Aaron LoupARB3$1.8M

Kevin PillarARB1$4M
Ryan GoinsARB1$1.8MNon-tendered

Roberto OsunaARB1$5.6M
Marcus StromanARB1$7.2M

Arbitration players have served 3-6 years of MLB service time. While in the first three years the team dictates the player’s salary under team control, when a player reaches arbitration they have the ability to negotiate their contract. If both parties can’t agree on a contract, the dollar value will be determined by an objective third party.

Undervalued players can sometimes get the short end of the stick if negotiations go to an arbitration panel. Arbitration hearings won’t look into numbers like FIP, UZR, or other advanced metrics in deciding the player’s contract. They rely on more basic numbers like batting average, RBI, and pitcher W/L records. A player like Aaron Sanchez will likely see less than he might deserve due to injury, etc impacting his ability to collect helpful stats for this process.

Here is a list of unrestricted free agents for the Blue Jays this offseason. Players who have at least six years of MLB service time will be free agents able to sign with any team.
