Toronto Blue Jays’ Josh Donaldson continues to deal with shoulder issues as he hits the 10 Day DL
Josh Donaldson heading to the DL! After a few complications in Spring Training, with first a nagging calf injury dating back to last season; and later “dead arm” syndrome which caused concern with throws from third at the end of spring and heading into the season opener with the Yankees. It landed him first in a DH role to keep his bat in the lineup, where he later returned to third in his regular role.
Josh Donaldson's shoulder had started to impact his hitting to an extent per manager John Gibbons. He's now on DL instead of DHing for #BlueJays

Once getting back to that role, he even finished a game at first when Kendrys Morales went out of the game with a hamstring pull against Baltimore. Thankfully, with the Blue Jays’ new found depth, they were able to fill the spot without losing Kendrys and Justin Smoak’s bat, who was slotted in at DH, in the same game. This, in a game the team later won, proved to be a great decision by John Gibbons to keep his team in the win column.
Now, the worst fear has been presented.
Josh Donaldson will also be heading to the DL to join Kendrys Morales and his ailing hamstring with his own, now reoccurring shoulder injury. It seems it is the same “dead arm” that popped up earlier. Now, with a DL listing dating back to April 11th, where the Jays sat Donaldson in the finale against Baltimore he will be there for 10 days of rest. It was mentioned that his day of Wednesday was “routine” and a normal day of rest, but most of the time as rumors and speculations often go…it appears to be more than that. Josh has mentioned that his, “throwing ability has not improved to his desired level,” and for the better of the team will take a back seat to Yangervis Solarte at third base.
What does this mean for the Blue Jays?
The BAD: With a series coming up tonight against Cleveland the club could use all the offense we can muster. Although Cleveland has been struggling, there is no doubt the ability is there.
The GOOD: Solarte has been special to this point, and everything we hoped he would be. He is holding down a .316 avg with 2 HR’s and 4 RBI’s in 11 out of 13 games so far. He has moved around the infield showing he is a team player and motivated to help in any way possible. The even better point of note, is that Solarte is a firecracker in the clubhouse too. The team will lack nothing in that department as Russell Martin has even been quoted as saying he is a “Munenori Kawasaki with Power”.
What is the long and short of it?
Not only will Donaldson miss the Cleveland series, he will also sit out through Kansas City. This, we can likely live with and get through it, but until his eligibility to return on the 21st…that will mean he will miss the first two games of the Yankee series in the Bronx. That is the short.
The long term effects, as we saw with Josh’s calf injury last season seemed to nag on forever, and just when we thought we were clear of that injury, it popped up again in Spring Training. If this nags on, and we stay successful…great, then we have Josh available for a pennant run. If we do not, heaven forbid, then this may hurt Josh’s trade value heading towards the end of July, and that could be costly both for this season and for our future. But, that is a whole other article, that we would rather not expand on at this time.
So speedy recovery Josh, hurry back. Ross Atkins went and got you some depth this season so while a speedy recovery is encouraged there is no need to rush things. Third is taken care of, and we seem to have plenty of bats currently. Take care of that arm, so in August, you can take care of us. God speed Josh. BW
