April 15th Blue Jays Minor League Recap: This weather blows

Join Jays From The Couch Every Morning For You Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Recap And Vlad And Bo Update

Good Monday morning baseball fans and a special good morning to all the Toronto minor league system lovers. I’m laying it on thick this morning because we are not alone in suffering from this garbage weather. The Blue Jays farm system, because of the doubleheaders, had a total of 5 games canceled yesterday. The Dunedin Blue Jays were the only team in the system to play and they didn’t even finish the game in its entirety.

The D-Jays played 3.1 innings before calling the game. At the time the D-Jays had just put up 5 runs in the top of the 4th to take a commanding 6 to 0 lead. Nash Knight was at the plate with Anthony Alford on 2nd and Logan Warmoth on 1st and one out.

The game is rescheduled for June 18th.

Tayler Saucedo was dealing, allowing just 2 hits over his first 3 innings.

Dalton Pompey and Anthony Alford were in Dunedin outfield and at the top of the order. Pompey was having a better game than Alford was having, going 2-for-3 with a pair runs scored, a stolen base, and hit a 2-run home run in the 4th with Yeltsin Gudino on base.

For the record, Anthony Alford was 0-for-2 with a walk.

Starters for April 16th and 17th……although I’m not holding my breath.

Buffalo Bisons (3-2)

#8 Ryan Borucki (0-1, 3.60 ERA)

In his last start, Borucki was tagged with the loss. He pitched 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (7-2)

#30 Jon Harris (1-0, 1.80 ERA)

In his last start, Harris picked up the win, going 5 innings. He allowed one run on 4 hits while walking one and striking out 3.

Dunedin Blue Jays (4-6)

The D-Jays don’t play again until Tuesday. They have not announced who they have on the mound.

Lansing Lugnuts (6-3)

Maverik Buffo (0-0, 2.25 ERA)

In Maverik’s last start, he pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one run on 5 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 6. He was teamed with Donnie Sellers, so maybe we will get to see him also.

Bo and Vladdy Show

No update on the Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero front as they were rained out.

Who’s Hot

The Jays pipeline is off to strong start with several players putting up some very good numbers.

Three players have 14 hits over the last 10 days.

Dunedin’s Joshua Palacios is batting .378, collecting hits in all but one of his 10 games. Palacios has just one extra-base hit but he already has 14 hits in 37 at-bats to along with 4 RBI and 3-runs scored. After stealing 12 bases in 2017, the talented outfield already has 3 as a member of the D-Jays.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. might be the hottest batter in the Blue Jays system right now. He has gone 13-for-36 over the last 10 days with 4 doubles, and 12 RBI to lead the system. He also has 2 home runs and is batting .361 with a healthy .419 OBP in 9 games.

Dwight Smith Jr. is showing better power in 2018 with a double and 2 long balls in 5 games. He hit 21 doubles and 8 HR in 2017 and will need to repeat those numbers if he hopes to make it to the majors in 2018.

Jonathan Davis is off to the races. Davis is batting just .250 but already has 5 stolen bases. He appeared in 128 games in 2017, stealing 20 bases. Speed is just one aspect of what makes Davis an interesting prospect. He also hits for power, collecting 2 hits, and gets on base with 7 walks (.415 OBP).

Kevin Smith is batting .333 with the Lansing Lugnuts. Last season, Smith played 58 games at short. This season, Smith is being asked to spend time at 3rd and has looked good. Smith has a strong arm and some quick feet so 3rd might be a good position for him. In 8 games, Kevin Smith has 11 hits, 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, a HR, 10 RBI, and 2 stolen bases. He also owns a .405 OBP and .921 OPS.

Last one,

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a character building season in 2017. He struggled with injuries which resulted in poor performance on the field. Well, he appears to healthy in 2018 and is off to a strong start. He has gone 12-for-37 at the plate with 3 runs scored, 3 doubles, a triple, and 9 RBI. He is still searching for his first home run.
