April 25th Blue Jays Minor League Recap: Kevin Smith leads Lugnuts….again

On Wednesday, April 25th, the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system won two games and lost 3, including both ends of a doubleheader in Dunedin.

 

Triple-A

 

Buffalo Bisons (5-6)

 

Buffalo won 5 to 2, to snap a 3 game losing skid.

 

Ryan Borucki pitched better in his third start of 2018 and the was lead by a Reese McGuire 2-run home run. Dalton Pompey, Anthony Alford, and Tim Lopes chipped in with 2-hits each.

 

Starter- Ryan Borucki 6.0IP, 5H, R, BB, 7K on 90 pitches

 

W- Borucki (1-2, 4.30 ERA)

 

H- Al Alburquerque (1)

 

SV- Jake Petricka (1)

 

Thursday, April 26th starting pitcher- Sam Gaviglio (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

 

Double-A

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (12-6)

 

The Cats lost  5 to 4.

 

Despite a 3-RBI day by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and 2-run which included a 9th inning home run by Patrick Cantwell, the Fisher Cats dropped their 6th game of the season.

 

Vladdy had singles while Bo Bichette and Cantwell also had a multi-hit game with a pair.

 

Zach Jackson picked up the loss after allowing the Rumble Ponies to walk off. Jackson allowed a leadoff double, uncorked a wild pitch, a pair of intentional walks before walking in the game’s winning run.

 

Starter- Nick Tepesch 5.1IP, 6H, 4R, 3BB, 5K, and HRA on 86 pitches

 

L- Jackson (1-1,  1.08 ERA)

 

Thursday, April 26th starting pitcher- #10 Sean Reid-Foley (3-0, 1.47 ERA)

 

Advanced-A

 

Dunedin Blue Jays (7-12)

Game 1

Dunedin lost 4 to 3

 

Joshua Palacios went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Bradley Jones hit a HR. Nash Knight and D.J. Davis both had 2 hits in the loss.

 

Patrick Murphy struggled with control and was lucky to get out of this one with only 3 earned runs. Connor Eller allowed the winning run to cross in the 7th, getting just one out.

 

Starter- Partick Murphy 6.0IP, 6H, 3R, 3BB, 2K throwing 98 pitches.

 

L- Connor Eller (1-1, 5.14 ERA)

 

Game 2

Dunedin lost 4 to 3

 

 

Dunedin’s Josh DeGraaf allowed 3 first inning runs but managed to right the ship to get through 5 innings.

 

Logan Warmoth, Bradley Jones, and Alberto Mineo each had 2-hits while Ivan Castillo and Eduard Pinto picked up the D-Jays only RBI.

 

Dunedin was 1-for-10 with RISP.

 

Starter- DeGraaf  5.0IP, 7H, 3ER, BB, 7K on 92 pitches

 

L- DeGraaf (1-3, 4.30 ERA)

 

Thursday, April 26th starting pitcher- #9 T.J. Zeuch (2-2, 4.07 ERA)

 

A-Ball

 

Lansing Lugnuts (12-6)

 

Lansing’s offense explodes for a 13 to 2 win.

 

Zach Logue didn’t need to be perfect in this one but still pitched a very good game. Danny Jimenez allowed one run over 2IP of relief and Kyle Weatherly pitched a near perfect 9th.

 

Once again, it was Kevin Smith leading the offense. Smith went 3-for-5 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI. Kevin Vicuna, Cullen Large, and Samad Taylor each had a pair of hits while Taylor also chipped in with a couple RBI.

 

Starter- Zach Logue 5.0IP, 6H, R, BB, 3K on 68 pitches

 

W- Logue (2-0, 2.78 ERA)

 

Thursday, April 26th starting pitcher- Donnie Sellers (2-0, 3.95 ERA) and Maverik Buffo (1-1, 7.15 ERA)

 

 

Player of the Day

 

POD Honourable Mention:

  • Buffalo’s Reese McGuire had a pair of hits and
  • Vladdy, see below
  • D-Jays Bradley Jones went 3-for-7 with 2 runs scored, a double, a home run, and an RBI.
  • Samad Taylor got the day off in the field with a turn at DH. He was also moved down the lineup to the 8th spot. Taylor went 2-for-4 with a run, a double, 2 RBI, and a walk.
  • Lugnuts Cullen Large went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, an RBI and a walk
  • Kevin Vicuna picked up 2 hits in 5 at-bats, scoring 3 runs for Lansing

 

Wednesday, April 25th’s POD goes to Kevin Smith.

 

That is back-to-back POD for Kevin Smith who is batting .267 with 4 runs scored, 9 RBI, and 3 SB over his last 10 games.

 

After going 2-for-5 with a home run and 5 runs batted in on Tuesday, Smith followed it up with 3-for-5 day at the plate on Wednesday. All three of Smith’s hits were doubles as he drove in 2 RBI and struck out once.

 

With Kevin Vicuna on 1st base in the 1st inning, Kevin Smith collected his first RBI with a double to left field.

 

Smith struck out in the 3rd.

 

In the 4th inning, Kevin Vicuna reached on an error and scored on Kevin Smith’s 2nd double to left field to cap a 4-run 4th.

 

Leading off the 6th inning, the Lugnuts SS grounded out to short.

 

In the 7th inning, with nobody on and one out, Kevin Smith collected his 3rd double of the game.

 

Bo and Vlad Show

 

Bo Bichette played short and batted 2nd for the Fisher Cats. Bo went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a double. He struck out once, stole a base, and committed an error.

 

Bichette is batting .256 over his last 10 games but he has 9 runs scored, 4RBI and 4 SB. For the season Bo is batting .303 with 4 doubles, 3 triples, and a .811 OPS.

 

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. plated 3 runs on 3 singles in 4 plate appearances. Vladdy batting .375 with 5 runs scored, and 13 RBI over his last 10 games. He owns a .353/.407/.529 triple slash with 22 RBI in 17 games.
