May 15th Blue Jays Minor League Recap: Chavez Young leads Lugnuts to victory

Tuesday, May 15th saw the farm experience a rain out, a doubleheader split, and a couple extra inning wins.

 

Triple-A

 

Buffalo Bisons (12-16)

 

Bisons were postponed due to rain

 

Wednesday, May 16th starting pitcher- Chris Rowley (3-1, 193 ERA)

 

Double-A

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (22-13)

 

Fisher Cats won 7 to 6 in extra innings.

 

Bo Bichette hit his first Double-A home run and Cavan Biggio hit his 11th home run.

 

Jonathan Davis hit his 2nd HR in the top of the 11, driving in Gunnar Heidt who started the inning at 2nd and Justin Shafer was able to hold the Yard Goats to a single run in the bottom half of the inning.

 

Dalton Rodriguez made his Double-A debut, throwing one shutout inning in relief of Tepesch. He also struck out two batters.

 

Kirby Snead threw 2 no-hit innings of relief and has yet to allow a run since being promoted on May 3rd.

 

Stater- Nick Tepesch 5.0IP, 8H, 5R, 2BB, 2K, and 1 HRA on 78 pitches

 

W-  Shafer (2-2, 0.52 ERA)

 

Wednesday, May 16th starting pitcher- Jordan Romano (6-0, 2.23 ERA)

 

Advanced-A

 

Dunedin Blue Jays (16-21)

 

Game 1

 

D-Jays lost 4 to 2

 

Logan Warmoth and Bradley Jones each had two hits. Jones hit a HR and drove in the clubs only 2 runs.

 

Joel Espinal pitched 3 shutout innings in his 2018 season debut. The 21-yr-old needed 34 pitches to strike out 3 and no-hit the Tampa Tarpons’.

 

Starter- Tayler Saucedo 3.0IP, 8H, 4R, BB, 2K on 57 pitches

 

L-Saucedo (2-2, 4.37 ERA)

 

Game 2

 

The D-Jays won 2 to 0.

 

Dunedin scored a run in the 3rd and 6th innings. Bradley Jones had the clubs only extra-base hit, his 9th double.

 

Jonathan Cheshire, Jake Fishman, and Nick Hartman combined to shutout Tampa and hold them to just 3 hits.

 

Wednesday, May 16th starting pitcher- Angel Perdomo (0-1, 2.65 ERA)

 

A-Ball

 

Lansing Lugnuts (25-13)

 

Lugnuts won 10 to 9.

 

Yeltsin Gudino singled home Brock Lundquist in the 10th inning for the walk-off win, the Lugnuts 7th win in a row.

 

Chavez Young, Christian Williams, and Samad Taylor each had three hits. Kevin Vicuna went 2-for-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI.

 

 

Maximo Castillo almost gave the game away, allowing a run in the 5th inning and 5 runs in the 8th inning. Castillo surrendered 3 doubles.

 

Starter- Colton Laws 4.0IP, 4H, 2R, 5K, and a HRA on 61 pitches

 

W- Matt Shannon (2-0, 4.15 ERA)

 

BSV- Kyle Weatherly (1)

 

Wednesday, May 16th starting pitcher- Yennsy Diaz (3-1, 2.27 ERA)

 

Player of the Day

 

POD Honorable Mention:

 

  • NH’s Vladdy and Bo combined to go 6 for 10. Jonathan Davis hit the eventual game-winning HR.
  • D-Jays Bradley Jones went 3-for-6 with a run scored, a double, a HR, and 2 RBI in the doubleheader. Cheshire, Fishman, Hartman shutout Tampa in game 2.
  • Lansing’s Kevin Vicuna went 2-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI. Samad Taylor scored 2 runs and went 3-for-5 with a double.

 

Tuesday, May 15th’s POD goes to Chavez Young.

 

Young kicked things off with a leadoff double, his 9th, in the first inning.

 

With Ryan Noda and Yelstin Gudino on base with one out in the 2nd inning, Chavez Young scored Noda and Gudino with a single to left field. RBI’s 18 and 19. Chavez was brought home on a Kevin Vicuna double (7).

 

The Lugnuts outfielder cashed in Yeltsin Gudino from 2nd base with a double (10) to right field. Vicuna cashed in Young again with a single to left.

 

Young was replaced by Norberto Obeso in the top of the 7th inning.

 

Chavez young is batting .348 with 16 hits, 7 runs scored, 6 RBI, and 4 SB over his last 10 games.

 

Bo and Vlad Show

 

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 1-for-4 and drove in his 39th RBI. Vladdy is batting an even .400 and holds a 1.101 OPS.

 

Bo Bichette went 2-for-6 with a run scored, his first HR, and 2 RBI. Bichette has back-to-back multi-hit games and is hitting .214 over his last 10 games.
