Blue Jays: A Quick Look at the Dunedin Blue Jays’ Rotation

Join Jays From the Couch as we cover the arms in the Toronto Blue Jays Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays rotation on June 17th.

We’re at the halfway mark in the Minor League season. I think that’s a good time to check in on the each of the affiliates starters. Let’s start at the top and work our way down. If you missed the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons’ rotation, click here. If you missed the Fisher Cats’ rotation, click here.

The Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays starting rotation consists several arms with ‘promise’ but none currently on the MLB Pipeline Top 30 list for the Toronto Blue Jays. Two of the D-Jays pitchers was only recently promoted to Dunedin.

Patrick Murphy (23)

The frequently injured former 3rd round selection finally appears fully healthy. Tommy John surgery, thoracic outlet syndrome, and a nerve issue in his elbow are all in the past. Murphy performance in 2018 can be described as consistent. The 6-foot-4 starter was promoted to New Hampshire for one start in late May and could be next in line for a chance at claiming a rotation spot with the Fisher Cats.

Tayler Saucedo (25)

The 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher spent 2017 moving between the bullpen and the rotation. This season, Saucedo has been a full-time starter for Dunedin and a good one. Tayler relies on command and pitching to contact.

Angel Perdomo (24)

The 6-foot-6 left-handed pitcher is in his 7th season in Toronto’s minor league system. Perdomo had his 2017 season end on July 8th and didn’t start his 2018 season until the end of April. Perdomo’s been much better at repeating his delivery and the results have followed. He’s still struggling to work deep into games but once he does, he’ll be heading to New Hampshire.

Zach Logue (22)

Another lefty in Dunedin, Zach Logue started the year in Lansing. The former 9th round selection was promoted to Dunedin on May 25th and has only looked overmatched in one of four Florida State League starts.

Yennsy Diaz (21)

The 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher from Azua, DR was promoted to Dunedin on May 22nd posting some very good numbers in 9 starts with Lansing. Diaz has an electric arm but is still very raw. Diaz will finish the year in Dunedin when he’s reached his inning limit sometime around the beginning of August.

Closing

Despite the Dunedin Blue Jays not having a very good record, the rotation has fared very well. The D-Jays can expect Murphy and Perdomo to move up to New Hampshire at some point. I wonder if Diaz will be moved to the bullpen to manage his innings. With any luck, Nate Pearson (broken ulna) will return to health (expected back mid-July) before the end of 2018 to bolster the D-Jays rotation in the second half.
