Blue Jays: A Quick Look at the A-Ball Lansing Lugnuts Rotation

Join Jays From the Couch as we cover the arms in the Toronto Blue Jays Full Season A-Ball Lansing Lugnuts rotation on June 18th.

We’re at the halfway mark in the Minor League season. I think that’s a good time to check in on the each of the affiliates starters. Let’s start at the top and work our way down. If you missed the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons’ rotation, click here. If you missed the Fisher Cats’ rotation, click here. If you missed the D-Jays rotation, click here.

The Full season A-Ball Lansing Lugnuts starting rotation consists several arms from the later rounds of the  2017 draft and talented IFA signee from Venezuela who is rated as the system’s 24th best prospect.

Maverik Buffo (22)

The 6-foot-2 right-handed starter was drafted in the 34th round of the 2017 Draft. Buffo had a strong 2017 with Bluefield and has managed to have the same type of success in Lansing. Buffo surrenders a lot of hits but limits free passes by pounding the strike zone. Buffo will need to miss more bats if he hopes to join Zach Logue and Yennsy Diaz in Dunedin.

Matthew Gunter (23)

The 33rd round selection started the season with Dunedin before joining Lansing. Gunter has struggled with his control since joining the Lugnuts rotation on May 25th. The left-handed starter will continue getting a turn every 5th day come hell or high water.

Colton Laws (22)

A 6-foot-7 right-handed starter, drafted in the 7th round didn’t start his season until April 29th but has taken a regular turn in the Bolts rotation since….with the exception of a two piggyback starts. He was on a pitch/inning count prior to June at which time Laws produced 4 consecutive 5.0IP starts and has thrown more than 70 pitches for time this season. During this time the lefty pitcher has picked up 3 straight wins.

Maximo Castillo (19)

Signed as an International Free Agent in 2015, Castillo made the jump from Bluefield to Lansing and not on any prospects list to being ranked as Toronto’s 24th best prospect in 2018. The right-handed starter is having an up and down season, struggling hard in June. Patience is needed with this young man, he has future middle of the rotation starter written all over him.

Donnie Sellers (21)

The 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher from High Point, NC is having an up and down season. Sellers is being asked to start but might be better suited coming out of the bullpen, unless he can replicate the 12 strikeout performance he had on April 9th.

Walking Wounded

Turner Larkins (22)

The 21st round selection landed on the DL June 13th. Larkins gives up a lot of hits and does a decent job of limiting free passes. The 6-foot-3 right-handed starter has struggled to get into the 5th inning.

Graham Spraker (23)

The 6-foot-3 right-handed starter is another late round pick from the 2017 draft to start for the Lugnuts. Spraker looked good before landing on the DL on May 18th. He does a good job of pounding the strike zone which has allowed him to limit walks.

Closing

The rotation took some time to material with most of the piggyback starts coming to an end June. The current rotation will look very similar to the one we see come playoff time with the exception of maybe Castillo being shut down early due to innings and the welcome addition of either Spraker or Larkins.
