Sunday, July 8th POD goes the Yennsy Diaz
Normally a 4-RBI game like the one that Jonathan Davis had or a 3-for-3 game like the one Harold Ramirez had would be enough for the POD but Yennsy Diaz’ start really caught my eye.
The 21-yr-old Dominican, making his 6th FSL start, threw 56 of his 80 pitches for strikes. He got an equal number of flyball outs and groundball outs with four each. After allowing back-to-back singles to start the game, Yennsy retired the next 12 batters before a leadoff single to start the 5th inning. He struck out the next two batters and got a ground ball out to end the 5th. Diaz finished his start with a three-pitch groundball out, and a pair of three-pitch flyball outs for a tidy 9-pitch 6th inning.
With another quality start under his belt as a member of the Dunedin Blue Jays, Diaz evened his FSL record at 2-2 with a .327 ERA while holding opponents to a .216 batting average. He is doing a good job of limiting baserunners with 40 strikeouts and 13 walks over 44.0IP for a 1.09 WHIP. Yennsy Diaz gets a lot of outs in the air holding a 0.63 GO/AO with the D-Jays, 14 points lower than his Lansing GO/AO.
Diaz has already set a new career high with 91.2IP and his next K will surpass the 82 batters he struck out in 2017. Diaz may need to be shut down at the end of July and should finish the year in Dunedin.
Bo and Vlad Show
Vladimir Guerrero Jr remains of the 7-day DL.
Bo Bichette was given the day off. He is riding a mini 3-game hit streak and the 2-RBI game was the first RBI’s he’s driven in 7 games. Bo is batting .267 with 46 RBI.
