Monday, July 30th POD goes to Maximo Castillo

The 19-yr-old righty from Venezuela is having an excellent season for the Lansing Lugnuts in 2018. Despite his ERA, Castillo has taken great strides in his development learning to make adjustments and deal with the adversities of a full season schedule. Monday was good to see.

Castillo threw 64 of his 97 pitches for strikes. He got four outs from groundballs and three outs from fly balls. Maximo Castillo finished with a game score of 62 (see pitching line above). He only had one 1-2-3 inning which came in the 1st inning, he fought his way through the next 5 innings.

The young starter didn’t exactly tight-rope his way to a win but it wasn’t a dominating start. He gave up a 1-out double in the 2nd inning before getting the next two batters to ground out. He gave up three singles with a strikeout sandwiched in there to load the bases in the 3rd inning before getting a fly ball to end the inning.

The 4th inning started with back-to-back singles but ended with a double play and an infield pop out. A ground ball out, a single, and a pair of fly ball outs was how the 5th inning went. Castillo tired in the 6th, allowing back-to-back walks to start the inning. He was helped out with a caught stealing before retiring the next two batters on an infield pop fly and a strikeout swinging to the final batter he faced.

A gritty start.

Castillo has lowered his ERA from 7.01 down to 5.13 over his last 10 starts, going 4-4 with a 4.32 ERA. Overall, the 6-foot-2 starter owns a record of 8-5 in 22 games striking out 83 batters and walking 36 across 98.1 innings. Opponents are batting .287 and he owns a 1.51 WHIP.
