The Toronto Blue Jays have a minor league system that is full of talented, young players, many of whom happen to be infielders. While there is a long way to go for any of them to even come close to knocking on the door of the big league club, it is a rather nice switch from the days of there being absolutely no positional players coming up. Instead, Toronto boasts the likes of Logan Warmoth, Bo Bichette, Ryan Noda and others. If you look further down the depth charts, you find an 18 year old from Magnolia Texas and he just happens to be having himself a nice season.

Jordan Groshans was selected 12th overall in the 2018 Draft as the Blue Jays used their first pick to select yet another infielder. The purpose here is not to assess the selection, so we’ll skip over that. Instead, we will focus on the fruits that this pick has yielded.

Groshans came to the Blue Jays with a bat that is said to be a middle of the order type, young as it is. There is thought to be power in his bat as well as an ability to use the whole field. That brief scouting report has shown to be rather accurate after 147 plate appearances in the Gulf Coast League. Groshans is slashing .336/.390/.507. He is showing a decent ability to get on base as he has collected 45 hits (34 games) to go along with 12 walks (a rate of 8.22%).

Fifteen of his 45 hits have gone for extra bases. He has 12 doubles and 4 home runs for a total of 68 total bases. His XBH% is 33.33%. A third of the time, he is hitting for extra bases. That is promising power. His HR% sits at 2.74 as he hits the long ball once every 33.5 at bats. His 39 RBI show an ability to produce, as well. A strike out rate of  19.18% is also encouraging. For such a young hitter, this combination of production and discipline certainly are encouraging.

On the defensive side of things, Groshans is listed as a short stop, but he has seen a bit more time at the hot corner in his brief time in pro ball. He has started 13 games at SS and 15 at third. He has shown good range at short as indicated by his 4.54 RF, which isn’t too shabby for a guy who is 6’3″, 174 lbs. The Blue Jays have also given him opportunity to In 66 chances, he has committed seven errors, starting 10 double plays. At third, he has a better fielding percentage (.951) in 41 total chances.

If you’re looking for a reason to be skeptical about an 18 year old who is raking in his first year of professional baseball, maybe you could point to a BABIP of .402. That said, Groshans’ number here could also fall into the ‘gotta be lucky to be good and good to be lucky’.

Should we be running out to buy Jordan Groshans Blue Jays shirzeys? Probably not. The kid is 18 years old. He has a long way to go before we start the hype train. Instead, we should look at this for what it is: the Toronto Blue Jays have a nice collection of young, talented position players that could mean good things in the future. They could make their way to the Rogers Centre and shine on the big stage. Or, they could also be used as trade chips to land other pieces.

Forgetting all of that for a moment, it is great to see a young kid perform right out of the gate. Jordan Groshans is one to watch as he progresses.
