Player of the Day

Tuesday, May 21st POD goes to Christian Williams

The native of Florida hit his first Double-A home run in the Fisher Cats shutout win as he continues what appears to be a breakout season. The 24-yr-old first baseman has surpassed Kacy Clemens on the depth chart despite his game power still being a non-factor in most games.

Williams played 1st base and batted 6th for New Hampshire.

Christian Williams struck out to lead off the 2nd inning but hit a 2-out double (3) in the 4th inning; unfortunately, he wasn’t able to score on Riley Adams single and was stranded as Chad Spanberger grounded out to the 2nd baseman for the 3rd out.

The former 16th rounder was hit by a pitch in the 6th inning, advanced to 2nd base on Adams’ single but was left stranded once again. In the 7th inning with one run already across the plate on a Vinny Capra sac fly, Williams hit a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall. The home run scored Santiago Espinal and Kevin Smith to push the Cats advantage to 5 to 0.

Williams finished the game with 2 hits in 3 at-bats, a double and a HR while scoring a run and driving in 3 runs (4). The 6-foot-3 LHB is batting .348 with a .984OPS in 7 games with New Hampshire. He owns a .438BABIP in AA which follows an Advanced-A .478BABIP so there is a very good chance some regression is around the corner. If Williams could maintain his .261 ISO and .440wOBA he could head to AAA as the Bisons are in need of a 1st baseman.

The Biggio and Espinal Show

Cavan Biggio was back at 2nd base, batting 4th. Biggio went hitless in 2 at-bats, scoring once, walking twice, and striking out once. He is batting .311 with a .954OPS. Cavan has 8 hits in 36 at-bats over the last 10 games which seen his batting average drop from .340.

Santiago Espinal played 2nd and batting 2nd for the Fisher Cats. He was hitless in 4 at-bats, scoring a run and walking once. Espinal has seen his batting average dip from .287 to .275 as he is hitting .214 over his last 10 games that include a 4-hit and 3-hit game 8 and 9 games back. Overall, Santiago owns a .335 OBP and .366SLG with 8 doubles and 2HR.
