Player of the Day
Tuesday, June 11th POD goes to Christopher Bec
Last year’s 5th round selection out of Miami, FL., 23-yr-old Bec saw limited action in April. Bec was playing behind Riley Adams in the opening month but has assumed a more prominent role with the Dunedin around May 18th. With Adams in New Hampshire, the D-Jays welcomed another hot hitting catching prospect in Alejandro Kirk. If you read my recaps with any sort of frequency than you are up to speed on how Kirk has performed in 2019; unfortunately, Bec has lost playing because of the success Kirk is having since joining Dunedin.
On Tuesday, Bec was behind the plate for GM2 of the Blue Jays doubleheader with the Fire Frogs. He batted cleanup. The 5-foot-11 catcher stroked a 2-run double to LF, scoring Logan Warmoth and Bo Bichette to give the D-Jays a 3-0 lead. Bec singled in his 2nd at-bat which came in the 3rd inning and put D-Jays on 1st and 3rd. That is until Bec swiped 2nd base for his 13th SB of the season. He would cross home plate with Dunedin’s 6th run courtesy of a Demi Orimoloye double.
Christopher Bec hit a flyball to CF in the 4th inning for an out. He singled in Cal Stevenson in the 5th inning to make the score 11 to 0. Bec struck out in his final at-bat to end the 7th inning.
Bec is swinging a hot bat with an 8-game hit streak which raised his batting average from .208 to .286. He is batting .375 over his last 10 games with 7 runs scored, 7RBI, one HR, 5 walks, 7 strikeouts, and 7 stolen bases……7’s wild.
With Bec and Kirk hit so well, we can expect to see more of this pair sharing the catching and DH duties.
Logan Warmoth played 2nd base in game 1 and game 2. His 8-game hit streak is now 10-games, as Warmoth collected a double and an RBI in GM1 and a single, a run, an RBI, a walk, and a K in GM2. He’s also reached base in 12 straight games. The former 2017 1st round selection is batting .371 over his last 10 games raising his batting average from .264 to .292. Overall, Logan owns a .380OBP, .803OPS with 7 doubles, a triple, 3HR, and 16RBI in 36 games. Warmoth spent some time on the IL between April 30th and May 23rd.
Bo Bichette Rehab
The Blue Jays top prospect in the system played SS and batted 3rd in GM1. He went 1-for-3 with a double and 2 errors. He was the D-Jays designated hitter in GM2. He collected a double and three singles for a 4-for-5 game. He scored a pair of runs while driving in one run and striking out once.
The Griffin Conine and Alejandro Kirk Show
Griffin Conine was the Lugnuts DH and batted 3rd. The 21-yr-old former 2nd round selection went 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored, a double, a pair of longballs (6), 5 RBI (16) and a strikeout. He is batting .438 with a 1.481OPS in 12 games.
Alejandro Kirk was behind the plate for the D-Jays in GM1, batting 4th. Kirk went hitless in 2 at-bats with a walk and a strikeout. Alejandro owns a .346 batting average in 24 games with the D-Jays. He has 11 doubles, 16RBI, 12/11 BB/K and an outstanding .905 OPS with Dunedin. Recently, Kirk seems to be mixing 0-for games with multi-hit games with three 3-hit games and a 2-hit game in his last 10 games to go with a five hitless games.
