Player of the Day
Friday, July 12th POD goes to Kevin Smith
Entering action on Friday night, Fisher Cats SS was riding an ugly streak which saw him striking out twice a game for six straight. Over his previous 10, Smith had 19K’s. He spent a few days on the 7-day IL between July 3rd and July 10th.
On the positive side, he was hitting a tiny bit better. He pushed his batting average up from .168 to .181. Not the season Blue Jay fans were hoping for. On Friday, Kevin Smith hit a home run in his first two plate appearances and didn’t strike out at all to snap his 2K/GP streak.
Playing SS and batting 7th, Smith’s first at-bat came in the 2nd inning with Chad Spanberger on base. Kevin jumped on the first pitch of the at-bat, sending it over the wall in CF for a 3 to 0 lead.
In the 4th inning, with the bases empty, Smith jumped on the first pitch again. This time he hit the ball over the LF wall for a 4 to 2 lead. Kevin Smith is now batting .278 over his last 10 games and .186 in 70 games; unfortunately, he owns a .247OBP and a .369SLG while striking out 92 times in 70 games.
Today was a win. Hopefully, Smith will find greater success in the 2nd half.
The Bo Bichette and Griffin Conine Show
Bo Bichette went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in GM1 while playing SS and leading off for the Herd. In GM2, Bo was back at SS and leading off. He went 0-for-2 with a walk, a strikeout, and a run scored. Overall, Bichette went 0-for-5 on the day and is batting .302 for Buffalo.
Griffin Conine was in RF and batting cleanup for the Lansing Lugnuts. He went hitless in 5 at-bats, striking out 3x. He’s struck out in 6 of his last 9 at-bats but is still batting .312 with a 1.025OPS in 37 games with Lansing.
