Player of the Day

Thursday, July 18th POD goes to Gabriel Moreno

It was not a good day in JaysLand, so let us give a little love Lansing’s 19-yr-old catcher whose been tearing up the Midwest League.

The International Free-Agent signed with the Blue Jays in 2016 out of Venezuela. He spent 2017 in the DSL (.248 and .570OPS). He split 2018 between the GCL and Bluefield, batting .413 with 2HR in 23 games in the GCL and .279 with 2HR in 17 games with Bluefield.

Moreno started the year in extended Spring Training, joining the Lansing Lugnuts after Alejandro Kirk received a promotion to Dunedin in the middle of May. He batted .333 in 11 games in May and hasn’t stopped hitting.

The 5-foot-11 catcher batted .282 with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, and 9RBI in 20 games played in June. He also walked more than he struck out with 7 walks to 6 K’s.

Gabriel was behind the plate again for the Lugnuts, batting 3rd. He picked up a pair of singles, 1st inning and 5th inning, and a 3rd inning walk. Moreno scored in the 1st inning off Griffin Conine’s 13th HR. Conine drove him in again in the 3rd inning off a double.

Over his last 10 games, Gabriel Moreno is batting .350 with a pair of HR, 5RBI, 3BB, and 3K. In 44 games, he has scored 30 runs while picking up 8 doubles, 3 triples, and 7 HR. He’s driven in 26RBI and walked 12 times while striking out 18. He owns a .306 batting average with a .890OPS.

The Bo Bichette and Griffin Conine Show

Bo Bichette went 1-for-4 with a caught stealing. The Blue Jays Top Prospect is batting .308 with hits in his last 6 games. Bichette has 31 runs scored, 15 doubles, a triple, and 7HR in 47 Triple-A games.

Griffin Conine went 2-for-3 with two runs scored (33), a double (9), a home run (13), three RBI, a walk (18), and yes, one strikeout (62). Griffin is batting .312 with a 1.036OPS.
