Blue Jays Player of the Week (April 9th-16th)

Jays From The Couch Takes A Look At The Blue Jays Best Hitter and Pitcher In Last Weeks Play

It was another so-so week for the Toronto Blue Jays. After winning the final game against the Boston Red Sox last Sunday on a brilliant pitching performance from Marco Estrada, and then beating the New York Yankees two games to one, the Blue Jays stumbled, losing the first two of a four game series against the Red Sox. With a chance to tie up the series in the next two days, this week is still not over. Some fans might be frustrated, but with more than five months left in the season, it’s not even close to being over! Even with a so-so week, it doesn’t mean there wasn’t a fair share of great individual performances. So lets get to it! Your Blue Jays players of the week are –

Hitter of the Week – Josh Donaldson .370/.393/.778, 10H, 2HR, 4RBI, 1BB, 8SO

For the second week in a row, Josh Donaldson is this weeks best hitter. Donaldson has come into this season in peak form, leading the American League in runs batted in (12), and tied for home runs (5), with Seattle Mariners second basemen Robinson Cano. The starting pitching has kept the Blue Jays floating for the first few weeks of the season, but the games which the Blue Jays won, it was most likely Donaldson’s bat leading the charge on offense.

Runner Up – Jose Bautista .333/.500/.762, 7H, 2HR, 8RBI, 7BB, 5SO

The other man leading the charge of the offense, is Jose Bautista. Bautista’s .478 OBP is hard to imagine, his first home runs of the season came in a multi homer game against Boston last Sunday. It’s very encouraging to see Bautista get off to a nice start this season. With the numbers Bautista is producing, it’s crazy he’s the runner up this week, but that’s exactly what makes this offense so deadly. Even with most of the team struggling to get on base, the duo of Bautista and Donaldson is keeping this offense alive in games.

Honorable Mention – Ryan Goins .278/.316/.444, 5H, 0HR, 2RBI, 1BB, 5SO

With the bottom of the order struggling to produce, Goins came up huge in the 7-2 win over the Yankees, going 3-4 with two doubles, and 2 RBI’s. It’s huge when the bottom of the order can be productive, allowing that dangerous trio of Donaldson, Bautista, and Encarnacion to go to work. The production from Ryan Goins in this game was a major reason why the Jays were able to score 7 runs, and run away with the win.

Pitcher of the Week –  Roberto Osuna 3.0IP, 1H, 0ER, 0BB, 4SO

It was simply just too tough to pick from all the stellar outings this week. Stroman, Happ, Estrada all had good outings, but one pitcher has truly gone above and beyond his role early this season. Roberto Osuna this week pitched three innings, allowing one batter to reach base, and striking out four. Some were skeptical of Osuna suffering a sophomore slump this season, and the more experienced Drew Storen should have taken his place closing out ball games. Again Osuna has silenced the doubters by starting of his season being truly effective, currently tied for second in the American League for Saves with four.

Honorable Mention – Pat Venditte 1.1IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 0SO

In his Blue Jays debut, Venditte pitched one inning against the team that drafted him, the New York Yankees. In that one inning, Venditte wouldn’t allow a baserunner, and got two easy ground ball outs. Although he may have struggled against the Red Sox, Venditte’s stellar play against the Yankees gives the middle of the Blue Jays bullpen some promising relief.

Fan Vote – Josh Donaldson .370/.393/.778, 10H, 2HR, 4RBI, 1BB, 8SO

For the second straight week the people have chosen Josh Donaldson as their MVP of the week. Hopefully when the offense starts clicking on all cylinders, these votes won’t be such a landslide. So thank you for all of you who voted, and stay tuned next Saturday for this upcoming weeks poll.
