August 30th Blue Jays Minor League Recap: Hurricane Dorian

Join Jays From The Couch Every Morning For Your Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Recap as well as Kevin Smith and Griffin Conine Updates

The system went 1 and 3. The big news yesterday come out of the Florida State League as they announced the end of the FSL/GCL season without playing the playoffs. This, of course, is due to the hurricane Dorian set to make landfall early next week. Obviously, player safety is more important than the playoff; however, it has to be very disappointing for the D-Jays who won the 1st and 2nd half-titles and appeared set to make some noise in the playoffs. If you remember, the Dunedin Blue Jays were named Co-Champions of the FSL two seasons ago when Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Cavan Biggio were on the club. This was because of Hurricane Irma.

Jays From the Couch thoughts and prays go out to everyone in the path of Dorian. Be safe.

Player of the Day

Friday, August 30th POD goes to the Will Robertson

The 21-yr-old Robertson was selected in the 4th round of the 2019 Draft. Assigned directly to the Vancouver Canadians, he had a tough June but excelled in July and August.

On Thursday, the left-handed batter went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs, three RBI, a walk, and his 1st HR since July 26th. Robertson had another solid game on Friday, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, 4RBI, and a HR.

Playing RF and batting cleanup, Robertson singled in the 1st inning to load the bases with one-out; unfortunately, Ryan Sloniger and Cameron Eden both K’d to end the inning. Robertson reached on an RBI single in the 3rd inning, giving the C’s a 2-1 advantage.

In the 4th inning, after a Tanner Morris walk, Spencer Horwitz, and a Philip Clarke flyout, Will Robertson stroked a 2-out, 3-run homer to RF. Vancouver with a 5 to 1 lead.

Will Robertson would groundout in his next two at-bats.

Over the last 10 games, the native of Loose Creek , MO., is batting .429 with 8 runs scored, 2HR, 8RBI/BB/K. Overall, Robertson owns a .759OPS, 11 doubles, 5HR, and 32RBI in 59 games.

The Kevin Smith and Griffin Conine Show

Kevin Smith went 0-for-3. No walks or strike outs. Smith is batting just .207 but will look to improve his stock in the Arizona Fall League.

Griffin Conine played RF and batted 3rd for the Lugnuts. Conine went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, and 2 strikeouts. He was lifted for a pinch-runner. Griffin has a .278BA with 18 doubles, 2 triples, 21RBI, 62RBI, 124K and a .935OPS in 78GP.
