Series preview: Toronto Blue Jays in Atlanta

Jays From the Couch gets you set for a two game set as the Toronto Blue Jays visit Hotlanta

Didn’t we JUST play against this team?

Toronto begins a six game road trip with a quick two game series against first place Atlanta.

Toronto is coming off a 2-3 homestand including splitting a two game series against this Atlanta team.

Toronto is in fourth place in the AL East division, 34.5 games behind the first place Yankees (and officially eliminated from winning the division).  They are 24.5 games out of the second wild card spot, one game from elimination at the time of writing. Toronto has stumbled lately, going 3-7 in their last 10 games, and they were no hit on Sunday to close out the home stand by Houston’s Justin Verlander.

Atlanta is in first place in the NL East division, 5.5 games ahead of second place Washington. They are trending in the opposite direction to Toronto, having gone 8-2 in their last 10 games at the time of writing.

Former Toronto 3B and 2015 AL MVP Josh Donaldson, by his own admission, had an emotional return to Toronto as a visitor last week. He went 0-7 in the two game series, although he did have two walks and a run scored in the second game. I wouldn’t expect Toronto’s staff to hold him hitless this time around.

Monday September 2nd, 1:20 pm EST

RHP Waguespack (TOR) vs RHP Soroka (ATL)

Jacob Waguespack:  4-2 record. 3.93 era. 4.49 FIP. 1.255 WHIP. 2.8 BB/9. 6.9 K/9

Waguespack followed up his best outing of the season, a 7 inning, 0 run 1 hit outing vs the NL leading Dodgers with a sub-par performance vs Atlanta. On August 28, he only lasted three innings, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Prior to that, he had gone seven straight games without allowing more than three runs per outing. He will hope for better results on the Labor Day matinee game.

Mike Soroka: 10-3 record. 2.44 era. 3.21 FIP. 1.090 WHIP. 2.0 BB/9. 6.9 K/9.

21 Canadian Soroka is having an outstanding season for Atlanta. He was an all star in 2019 and he is one of the big reasons his team enjoys a comfortable lead atop the NL East division.

Soroka’s last game was against Toronto on August 27. He pitched 6 innings and Toronto got to him for 8 hits. He gave up two runs with no walks and only a single strikeout. Toronto will be happy to face anyone not named Verlander on this day.

Tuesday September 3rd, 7:20 pm EST

TBD (TOR) vs RHP Foltynewicz (ATL)

Toronto has another scheduled bullpen day on Tuesday. On one hand, Toronto fans can reasonably hope there won’t be too many more of these in 2019. The Buffalo Bisons season is ending tomorrow. At the very least, it is expected that Sean Reid-Foley and Thomas Pannone will be called up after then. As well, there are rumours that one or both of Anthony Kay and T.J. Zeuch could be added to the 40 man roster and make their MLB debuts this month.

On the other hand, bullpen days haven’t gone too badly for Toronto. Their most recent one was on September 1, where they held  AL West leading Houston to 2 runs on 5 hits. Either way it should be an interesting game/series.

Mike Foltynewicz: 4-5 record. 5.59 era. 5.53 FIP. 1.437 WHIP. 3.2 BB/9. 8.2 K/9

Foltynewicz has had an up and down season for Atlanta – literally and figuratively. He did not pitch well from April-June, with an era over 6, and was sent to the minors. Since being recalled in August he has been a lot better, pitching to a 3.90 era in August.

His last start was August 28 against Toronto. He lasted 4.2 innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. He will hope to last longer in to this game and come out with a win.

Prediction: it could take Toronto a few games to get their hitting timing back after being no hit on Sunday. Atlanta is a tough first place team that will look to take advantage. I’m picking them to win both games, hope Toronto can prove me wrong.
